About Us

Our History

The idea of starting Compassion for Community started in 2016 when getting an education was very difficult for children in many poor communities in Kiryandongo District of Uganda. The existing government schools were often too far away, too crowded, and the private schools were too expensive for families who struggled financially. Education felt like an impossible dream.

Seeing this great need and the struggles of these children and parents, one caring person, Loku Abiya started “Compassion for Community” in 2017. He believed every child deserved a chance to learn.

The goal was clear: to fix this problem by building new schools directly in the most underserved communities. He didn’t just build; he first spent time in these areas to understand local needs, then set up well-equipped schools where they were most needed.

What makes the schools unique is their self-sustaining approach. After building and setting up the schools (with classrooms, toilets, and learning materials), Compassion for Community hands them over to the local community to manage. Local teachers are hired, parents get involved, and small community contributions or local activities help cover ongoing costs. This model ensures communities are empowered to run their own schools, rather than depending on outside help.

Since 2017, Compassion for Community was registered in Uganda as an community organization and turned the dream of education into a reality, one community-run school at a time. Compassion for community is not just creating buildings; we are building hope and helping entire communities create brighter futures for themselves.
